Mary Poppins original screen used bag, used by Julie Andrews in the 1964 Walt Disney film, “Mary Poppins”, was auctioned in 2010 for $95,000 (over $110,000 with buyers premium added) by well known auction house, Profiles in History as part of their Hollywood Auction 40 held in 2010.
The bag, lot #864, came from a family who were part of a segment of the SyFy channel series, Hollywood Treasure, hosted Profiles in History’s CEO and President, Joe Maddalena.
The family explained to Joe that the bag was the grand prize of a contest from the 1960’s. No further information was available at the time as to the details of the contest.
Entertainment Minute has discovered what is possibly the missing link to this mystery with a photograph of the ad for the contest from 1964.
The contest was for Kraft Chocolates. The Poppins bag was the Grand Prize and included $10,000 cash inside the bag as discussed on the Hollywood Treasure episode.
Other prizes included the second prize of 25 portable televisions, third was 50 portable projectors, fourth was 15,000 Mary Poppins dolls (with a miniature carpet bag), and fifth prize was 85,000 Mary Poppins records.
